The Ultimate Himalayan Adventure in Nepal
(Kathmandu to Kathmandu)
Embark on Nepal’s ultimate Himalayan adventure with Alpine Expeditions. Summit Island Peak (6,189 m), trek to Everest Base Camp, cross the legendary Three High Passes, explore the pristine Gokyo Lakes, and experience one of the world’s finest alpine expeditions.
Nepal's Ultimate High-Altitude Mountaineering Journey
Few adventures in the Himalayas rival the scale, diversity, and sense of accomplishment offered by the Island Peak Expedition with Everest Base Camp and the Three High Passes Trek. Combining world-class trekking, glacier travel, technical climbing, and rich Sherpa culture, this 24-day expedition is widely regarded as one of Nepal’s most complete alpine experiences.
Designed for experienced trekkers and aspiring mountaineers, this extraordinary journey takes you deep into the heart of the Khumbu, following ancient trading routes through traditional Sherpa villages, sacred Buddhist monasteries, pristine alpine lakes, dramatic glaciers, and some of the highest mountain landscapes on Earth. Along the way, you’ll stand at Everest Base Camp (5,364 m), witness sunrise over Mount Everest from Kala Patthar (5,545 m), cross the legendary Renjo La, Cho La, and Kongma La passes, and ultimately summit Island Peak (6,189 m)—one of Nepal’s most iconic trekking peaks.
Every stage of the expedition has been carefully planned to provide optimal acclimatization, allowing you to safely adapt to the increasing altitude while enjoying the breathtaking beauty of the Everest region. Whether crossing glaciated mountain passes, climbing fixed ropes on Island Peak, or watching prayer flags flutter beneath Ama Dablam, every day delivers unforgettable moments that define Himalayan exploration.
Why This Expedition is Truly Unique
Unlike the classic Everest Base Camp Trek, this expedition takes you beyond the well-travelled trail into the remote corners of the Khumbu. By combining the Three High Passes Trek, Gokyo Lakes, Everest Base Camp, and the Island Peak climb into one seamless journey, you experience nearly every iconic landscape the Everest region has to offer.
The route begins in Kathmandu before a spectacular mountain flight to Lukla, home to the famous Tenzing–Hillary Airport, often regarded as one of the world’s most challenging mountain airports. From there, the trail winds through rhododendron forests, suspension bridges draped with prayer flags, vibrant Sherpa settlements, and glacier-carved valleys beneath some of the world’s highest peaks.
Crossing the Three High Passes adds an entirely new dimension to the expedition. Renjo La rewards trekkers with breathtaking views over the turquoise Gokyo Lakes and four of the world’s highest mountains. Cho La offers an exhilarating glacier crossing through rugged alpine terrain, while Kongma La, the highest of the three, provides an unforgettable traverse through one of the most remote sections of the Everest region.
The expedition culminates with a professionally guided ascent of Island Peak (Imja Tse). Under the guidance of experienced climbing leaders, you’ll learn essential mountaineering skills including glacier travel, crampon techniques, ascending fixed ropes with a jumar, abseiling, and high-altitude climbing before making your summit attempt.

After climbing Gokyo Ri, the route continues across the glaciated Cho La Pass to Everest Base Camp, followed by sunrise from Kala Patthar. Crossing the demanding Kongma La Pass, you descend into the Imja Valley where technical climbing training prepares you for the ascent of Island Peak.
Following a successful summit, the expedition retraces its route through Dingboche, Tengboche, Namche Bazaar, and Lukla before returning to Kathmandu.
Island Peak – Your First Himalayan Summit
At 6,189 metres, Island Peak is considered one of Nepal’s finest introductory alpine climbing objectives. While technically more demanding than a standard trekking peak, it provides the perfect opportunity for trekkers looking to transition into mountaineering.
The climb involves:
- Glacier travel
- Crampon techniques
- Fixed rope ascents
- Jumar climbing
- Ice axe skills
- Snow and ice climbing
- High-altitude expedition experience
From the summit, climbers are rewarded with extraordinary panoramic views of Everest (8,849 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Makalu (8,485 m), Ama Dablam (6,812 m), Baruntse (7,129 m), and countless Himalayan giants stretching across Nepal and Tibet.
The Legendary Three High Passes
Crossing the Three High Passes is considered the ultimate trekking circuit in Nepal.
Renjo La (5,360 m)
Perhaps the finest viewpoint in the Everest region, Renjo La offers breathtaking views of the Gokyo Lakes, Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Makalu, and Gyachung Kang.
Cho La (5,420 m)
A spectacular alpine crossing featuring glaciers, rocky ridges, and one of the most adventurous sections of the expedition.
Kongma La (5,535 m)
The highest and most demanding of the three passes, Kongma La traverses remote glacial terrain and rewards trekkers with magnificent views of the Khumbu’s towering peaks.
Everest Base Camp & Kala Patthar
No journey into the Everest region is complete without standing at the legendary Everest Base Camp, where climbers from around the world prepare for their ascent of the world’s highest mountain.
The following morning, a pre-dawn climb to Kala Patthar provides arguably the finest viewpoint of Mount Everest, as the first rays of sunlight illuminate the summit and surrounding Himalayan giants.
